    Introduction of gutters and downspouts

Gutters and downspouts are essential, often overlooked, drainage components that protect a building’s foundation, walls, and landscaping by directing roof runoff away from the structure. Gutters are horizontal channels, while downspouts are vertical pipes that carry water down. Proper maintenance, including cleaning twice a year.

    Purpose and Function

    • Foundation Protection: Prevents water from pooling at the base of the house, which can lead to structural issues and basement flooding.
    • Landscaping Protection: Diverts water to prevent soil erosion and damage to plants.
    • Siding and Structure Protection: Stops water from cascading over the sides, protecting fascia boards and siding from rot.

Key Components of a Gutter System

    1. Gutters: Troughs mounted along the roof edge (usually      aluminum, vinyl, steel, or copper).
    2. Downspouts: Vertical pipes leading water to the ground.
    3. Hangers/Brackets: Secure the gutters to the fascia/roof.
    4. Elbows: Angled pieces to direct water flow, often at the top and bottom of the downspout.
    5. Outlet Tubes: Connect the gutter to the downspout.
    6. Extensions/Splash Blocks: Divert water away from the foundation at the ground.

    Installation and Design Considerations

    • Capacity: Standard residential gutters are 6-inch, while 7-inch or larger gutters are recommended for larger roofs or high-rainfall areas.
    • Downspout Spacing: Typically, one 3x4 downspout is required for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter. Sometimes a wider downspout is recommended in areas with a higher volume of water.
    • Slope (Pitch): Gutters must be sloped slightly downward toward the downspout—usually 1/4 inch of drop for every 10 feet.
    • Location: Downspouts should discharge water at least 4 to 10 feet away from the foundation.  An underground drainage is a great idea!

    Maintenance and Common Issues

    • Cleaning: Clean gutters at least twice a year to remove leaves and debris.
    • Issues: Watch for sagging sections, leaks, and loose hangers.
    • Damage: Downspouts may clog or become damaged, and metal gutters may rust (especially galvanized steel).
    • Upgrades: Install gutter guards to reduce maintenance and  prevent debris accumulation.

Gutters are an essential part of the home. The main function of a gutter system is to keep water away from the exterior and foundation of the house, as it falls off the roof. Gutters protect your roof, siding and foundation from erosion and water damage.

Clogged or leaky gutters are one of the biggest causes of basement leaks, mold and other foundation problems. Also, standing water in gutters is one of the common places mosquitoes breed.

    1. Old worn-out gutters are unappealing and reduce the value of your property.

    2. Your old gutters may have become bent or dented or may be pulling away from your home in a manner that they cannot be reattached or reworked.

    3. Your old seamed gutters may have begun to pull apart or have leaks and you would like to replace them.

    4. You want to change the color of your gutters.

    5. The drainage of your current guttering is not sufficient so you want to install a larger size gutter and downspout system. Most homes and commercial properties have 5 inch gutters with 2×3 downspouts, but we can install 6 inch gutters with 3×4 downspouts when necessary.

If during a rainfall, you can hear the water slapping the ground, pouring over the sides of the gutter, there may be a blockage or the gutter itself may not be aligned evenly. If you notice paint peeling or corroded wood, the gutter is most likely clogged and is causing the water to overflow and run down the back of gutter along the exterior walls of the house. If you notice mold or if you see puddles of water forming around the outside of your house it’s a sure sign that there are drainage problems.

Certainly, if you are a regular do-it-yourselfer and are comfortable on a ladder, you can install sectional gutters, but you’ll need a qualified professional to install seamless gutters.

If you’re considering installing a new gutter system or replacing an old one, the cost will be a big factor. Often this is determined by the material you choose and how much gutter you need for your home.

With proper care and maintenance, most gutters should last for about 20 years without needing a replacement. Copper gutters are known for their longevity, with most not needing a replacement for 50 years.

The task most often associated with gutters is, of course, cleaning. Getting debris like leaves and twigs out of your gutter is extremely important. A clogged gutter can cause damage to your roof or a leak inside of your home when it rains. Not to mention, it presents a fire hazard during dry conditions. It’s recommended that you clean your gutters at least twice a year, in spring and fall. You may need to do so more frequently if your gutters are located close to trees or after a heavy storm. The average cost to clean gutters and downspouts is $150.

If you find yourself cleaning your gutters more often than you would like, it might be best to invest in a gutter guard system. There are many different varieties, some that go over your gutters and some that are tubes within, to prevent debris from settling. Determine your budget and what best fits your needs.

Anytime you need a gutter repair or installation, you should contact a gutter contractor. A gutter that’s installed incorrectly can cause problems for your home or end up costing you more long-term. For repairs, it’s best to have a pro find the source and make the appropriate fix. Gutter repairs costs around $300 on average.  A heavy storm that produces hail may damage your gutters. This is a good time to contact a pro for an inspection.

Unless you see the damage, you likely don’t think about your gutters very often. One of the best ways to tell if gutters are working is by doing an inspection. It’s best to do so after you’ve cleaned your gutters. Check the downspouts and seams for separation or cracks. Make sure everything is aligned. If you notice something that seems out of place, be sure to contact a contractor.  Another thing you'll want to observe is peeling paint. This can be a sign that there's an issue.  "If you notice that the paint on your home is peeling, this is an indication that your gutters aren’t working,".  It means you have an overflow issue as water runs down the back of your gutter along the exterior of your home. Your gutters could be worn out, misaligned, or clogged."

Gutters are an important feature of the home, so it’s important to make sure they are taken care of correctly. When maintained properly, gutters can last a long time and protect your home from water damage.
